Agentic commerce had a false start: OpenAI’s Instant Checkout, launched with Stripe in 2025, was quietly shut down in March 2026 — fewer than 30 of Shopify’s millions of merchants ever went live with it. Shopify’s answer, launched March 24, 2026, is Agentic Storefronts: instead of betting on one checkout flow, it plugs the entire catalog into the AI channels where buying decisions are already being made.
What Agentic Storefronts actually gives you
- Default discoverability in ChatGPT — products become discoverable automatically via Agentic Storefronts, with no separate integrations, no apps, and no transaction fees beyond standard processing rates.
- Microsoft Copilot — thousands of merchants are already selling there.
- AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app — select brands live, broader rollout in progress.
- Non-Shopify brands can join via the new Agentic plan: add products to Shopify Catalog and become shoppable across AI channels and the Shop app.
The demand side is no longer hypothetical. A June 2026 Drapers / Athos Commerce survey of 2,000 UK consumers found 60% reach for ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini while shopping fashion — and roughly half of Gen Z is willing to check out inside a chatbot, against 21% of Gen X.
The catch: discoverable is not recommended
Shopify’s own launch language points at the real work: these AI surfaces favor structured data, with clean attributes and real-time accuracy. The toggle puts you in the catalog; it does not decide whether ChatGPT names your product when a buyer asks "best <category> under $100." That decision is made by the assistant, answer by answer — and it is measurable.
The merchant checklist (in order)
- Confirm the channel is live: in Shopify Admin, check that Agentic Storefronts is active for your store and your catalog is syncing without errors.
- Clean your attributes: exact product titles, filled-in variant attributes (size, color, material), accurate availability, and prices that match your PDP to the cent. AI assistants quote these verbatim — a stale price in the feed becomes a wrong price in a million chats.
- Keep Schema.org Product markup on your PDPs in parity with the feed (price, availability, ratings). Assistants cross-check the page when citing.
- Write 10–20 buyer prompts that should surface your SKUs: "best <category> for <use case>", "<category> under $<price>", "<your product> vs <competitor product>". These are your tracking set.
- Run the set weekly and log which SKUs surface, at what position, with what claims. Presence without position is vanity; position without accurate claims is a liability.
- Audit wrong claims first: a wrong price or wrong availability statement in an AI answer loses the sale AND the trust. Fix the source data, then re-test the exact prompt.
Measuring it without building your own probe rig
Steps 4–6 are exactly what Arenza automates: weekly scans of ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity against your prompt set, SKU/brand-level surfacing per prompt, wrong-claim detection with the producing prompt attached, and fix suggestions anchored to specific claims. Arenza Pro is $9.99/mo for single-brand ChatGPT tracking — the channel where Agentic Storefronts gives you default discoverability — and Arenza Protect at $99/mo + usage covers all three assistants, multi-brand, with white-label for agencies.
