What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of making sure AI assistants — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity — describe your brand the way you want when users ask about your category.
Where SEO optimizes for "show up in Google's top 10 blue links", GEO optimizes for "be in the answer". The question shifts from ranking to mention.
Why GEO matters in 2026
- ChatGPT alone serves 600M+ weekly active users (OpenAI, Q1 2026); a meaningful slice of buyer-discovery happens there before Google.
- AI assistants pick a small set of sources to summarize from — being one of them is now a top-of-funnel acquisition channel.
- Misinformation in AI answers (wrong specs, wrong category placement, false attribution) costs deals before sales hears about them.
The 2 pillars of GEO
Pillar 1 — Visibility
Across the prompts your buyers actually ask ("best USB-C hub for MacBook 2026"), what % of AI answers mention your brand, and at what rank? Track this over time, per LLM, per market.
Pillar 2 — Accuracy
When AI does mention you, is it correct? Track wrong-claim count, claim verdict (false/outdated/partial), severity, and the verbatim quote. Without this, visibility is half the picture — being mentioned wrong is sometimes worse than not being mentioned.
The 5-step GEO playbook
- Define the prompts buyers ask. Not your branded keywords — the unbranded buyer questions ("best AI customer support tool", "wireless earbuds with best ANC for travel"). Aim for 50–150.
- Probe across LLMs. Run each prompt against 4–6 LLMs weekly. Capture mention, rank, verbatim text, citation URLs.
- Measure visibility + accuracy. Visibility = mention rate. Accuracy = % of mentions where the claim matches your ground truth.
- Identify fix opportunities. Discussions to engage in (Reddit / HN / Quora threads with high citation pull). Articles to write (listicle topics with high cited-count). Sources to win (publishers AI cites in your category).
- Publish and re-test (T+24h). Publish the fix on your owned site or a new third-party piece. Re-probe the same prompt 24h later, measure delta.
Tools
As of May 2026 the GEO tooling market has 5 mainstream players — Arenza, Ahrefs AI Search, Profound, Peec.ai, and Semrush AI Toolkit. They differ in LLM coverage (Arenza Protect tracks 3 platforms vs Ahrefs' 1), agency features, and price. See our tool comparison.
Common GEO mistakes
- Tracking only ChatGPT — Claude users + Perplexity users + Gemini users don't care if you rank in ChatGPT.
- Optimizing branded prompts ("Acme review") — the win is in unbranded, top-of-funnel prompts where you're competing for first mention.
- Skipping accuracy — you can be highly visible and highly wrong; both losses compound.
- Treating it as one-time — AI answers shift weekly as models update and citation graphs reweight; GEO is a recurring practice, not a one-off audit.
